Visualising Global CO2 Emission by Countries and Sectors
Created interactive visualisations to analyse and report on global CO2 emissions by country and sector, providing actionable insights.
Overview
As part of a data visualization project at Teesside University, Petgrave.io's data analyst was tasked with creating interactive visualizations to provide insights into global CO2 emissions by country and sector. The goal was to leverage open-source data to develop impactful data stories that could inform decision-making and drive sustainability initiatives.
The Challenge
The project required the data analyst to:
Identify and source relevant data on global CO2 emissions
Clean, transform, and prepare the data for effective visualization
Create sharable, interactive visualizations that could convey insights on CO2 emissions by country and sector
Synthesize the findings into a comprehensive scientific report
Our Approach
Data Collection and Preparation: The data analyst utilized open-source datasets on global CO2 emissions, processing and transforming the data using Excel to ensure it was clean, structured, and ready for visualization.
Visualization Development: Using Excel's charting and data visualization capabilities, the analyst created a series of interactive visualizations, including charts, graphs, and infographics, to showcase the CO2 emission patterns by country and sector.
Reporting: The data analyst documented the entire process, from data sourcing to visualization development, in a well-structured scientific report. This report highlighted the key insights derived from the data and provided recommendations for potential applications of the visualizations.
Technologies and Tools
The Petgrave.io data analyst leveraged the following technologies and tools to complete the data visualization project:
Data Preparation: Microsoft Excel was used for data cleaning, transformation, and the creation of connections and metrics.
Visualization: The analyst utilized Excel's charting and infographic capabilities to develop the interactive visualizations, including charts, graphs, and tables.
Reporting: The scientific report was written using standard academic writing practices and formatting.
The Results
Developed a comprehensive dataset of global CO2 emissions by country and sector
Created a suite of interactive visualizations, including charts, graphs, and infographics, to showcase the insights
Synthesized the findings into a well-structured scientific report, highlighting the key insights and recommendations
